WELCOME ABOARD

Ian at Sea and on Land

You could say that my love of the Sea and Ships goes back to my days as a young boy growing up in Southampton—not too far from the Docks and the Ocean Terminal.

My father was a Marine Engineer

who sailed on the South American Run

with the Royal Mail Line.

He later retired

from Harland and Wolff.

My grandfather

"Grandad" Roland Owen of Holyhead Wales

sailed with The White Star Line

on the R.M.S. Olympic, Celtic, Mauritania and the R.M.S. Majestic

as Chief Butcher.

He retired after 35 years of service.

At the age of 16 years,

I followed in their footsteps

and attended The British Merchant Navy School

at Gravesend, Kent.

Upon completion, I began my career AT SEA.

My first trip was on the R.M.S. Queen Mary

--destination--

 Pier 90, OCEAN LINER ROW,

New York Harbor.

Subsequently, I was also fortunate

to work on the

R.M.S. Queen Elizabeth,

S.S. Ocean Monarch

and the Queen of Bermuda.

After immigrating to America, I joined the US Merchant Marine.

I attended The Harry Lundeberg School of Seamanship, Brooklyn, New York.

I sailed to Vietnam on the US GOVERNMENT Ammunition Ships from 1968 thru 1970--

the S.S. Swarthmore Victory,

the Canada Bear and

the S.S. Seatrain Georgia .

New York City has been my home port for many years.

Wind In The Willows

As I went a walking one morning in Spring,

I met with some travelers on an old country lane.

One was an old man, the second a maid,

The third was a young boy who smiled as he said,

"With the wind in the willows, the birds in the sky,

There's a bright sun to warm us wherever we lie.

We have bread and fishes, a jug of red wine

To share on our journey with all of mankind."

So I sat down beside them with flowers all around

And ate from a basket spread out on the ground.

We're traveling to Glaston over England's green lanes

To tell of our travels and share of our pains.

"With the wind in the willows, the birds in the sky,

There's a bright sun to warm us wherever we lie.

We have bread and fishes a jug of red wine

To share on our journey with all of mankind."

We've travelled the wide world over land and the sea,

To tell all the people how they can be free.

So sadly I left them on that old country lane,

For I knew that I'd never see them again.

"With the wind in the willows, the birds in the sky,

There's a bright sun to warm us wherever we lie.

We have bread and fishes a jug of red wine

To share on our journey with all of mankind."
